Suspect In Shooting Death Of Health Insurance CEO Seen In Surveillance Photos

Surveillance footage near the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan captured the person suspected of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday morning, The New York Post reported.

The images show an individual in black clothing with a backpack appearing to hold a long handgun, which they fired multiple times at Thompson from around 20 feet away, law enforcement sources told the Post. Another image shows the suspect fleeing on a bike after the shooting. The suspect is still at-large and has not been identified.

Police will release a flyer showing the surveillance images and are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who has information on the suspect, according to The New York Times.

Thompson, 50, was pronounced dead after arriving at an area hospital, and authorities are investigating the shooting as a potential targeted attack on the CEO. Thompson was on his way to the Hilton hotel for the UnitedHealth Group’s annual Investor’s Conference when he was shot. The Times reported that the shooter appeared to know where Thompson was going to enter the hotel.

UnitedHealthcare is a subsidy of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest companies in the world. Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was promoted to CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021 after he joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004.

“This is a shocking and devastating loss for our whole community,” said Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, a city where UnitedHealthcare has a major presence. “‘Shocking’ is the only word I can find at the moment.”

Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz said Thompson’s killing is “horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
