Trump To Potentially Give TikTok 90-Day Extension To Be Sold Before Ban

President-elect Donald Trump said over the weekend that he will “most likely” give TikTok, the social media company owned by the Chinese-controlled company ByteDance, an extension of 90 days to be sold off before it faces being banned in the United States.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with NBC News after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld a law on Friday that requires ByteDance to be completely divested from the app or be banned from the U.S.

“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at,” Trump said. “The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation.”

“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” he continued.

President Joe Biden signed the law forcing the app to be sold last April, yet the administration does not want to take credit for it because they are worried about backlash from those who might be negatively impacted if the app ceases operations.

TikTok has said that it will “go dark” starting on Sunday, something that the Biden White House claimed was a “stunt” as they seek to punt the ball to the Trump administration.

“We have seen the most recent statement from TikTok,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “It is a stunt, and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday.”

“We have laid out our position clearly and straightforwardly: actions to implement this law will fall to the next administration,” she continued. “So TikTok and other companies should take up any concerns with them.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
