Canadian media reported late on Sunday night that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to resign this week as Liberal Party Leader.
The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday cited multiple sources in reporting that Trudeau could step down as soon as tomorrow and that it is expected to happen before a key national caucus meeting takes place on Wednesday.
Trudeau took over as leader of the far-left party in 2013 and has served as the prime minister of Canada since 2015.
Politico reported last week that the majority of his caucus had called on him to resign while he was on a ski holiday as he trails far behind populist conservative Pierre Poilievre.
Trudeau has been damaged by President-elect Donald Trump’s victory last year and threats from the incoming president to hit Canada with tariffs for not helping to secure America’s northern border.
Trump has also regularly taunted Trudeau, saying he could become governor of Canada after the country joins the U.S. as the 51st state.
Multiple top officials in his administration have resigned as they lose confidence in his ability to lead.
During a meeting with Trudeau last month, Trump reportedly told the Canadian leader that if his country couldn’t afford to pay a potential tariff, it should consider becoming the 51st state.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!,” Trump wrote.
