Comer Announces Probe into Whether Harris Did ‘Anything’ To Address Border Crisis

The GOP-led House is embarking on an investigation into Vice President Kamala Harris over her role in the Biden administration’s struggle to get a grip on the border crisis.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the probe on Tuesday in a letter addressed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy Miller, requesting documents and communications between CBP and the Executive Office of the Vice President related to the southwest border or illegal immigration.

President Joe Biden tasked Harris with leading efforts to deal with Mexico and other countries to stem the tide of migration to the southern U.S. border in March 2021. At the time, Harris said the government “must address the root causes … that cause people to make the trek.” Harris faced criticism, particularly from Republicans, in the years since as problems with migration persisted.

“It is unclear what actions, if any, Vice President Harris has taken to fix the border crisis,” Comer wrote. “Rather, she has claimed that ‘[w]e have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation.’ The Committee seeks to understand whether Vice President Harris has ‘done anything’ to address the worst border crisis in American history.”

Comer was alluding to a quote published by the New York Post in which an unnamed Border Patrol agent said Harris “hasn’t literally done anything … she came to the border once and we sanitized all the aliens out of there to make it look good.”

Over the past few years, Comer added, “there have been more than 8 million illegal aliens encountered entering the country through the southwest border and over 1.6 million ‘gotaways.’ The mass illegal migration under the Biden-Harris Administration has contributed to murders, sexual assaults, and serious bodily injuries committed against numerous Americans at the hands of illegal aliens.”

Harris is running for the presidency now that Biden has ended his re-election campaign. On Tuesday, before Comer publicly released his letter to Miller, Harris picked Tim Walz, the liberal Democrat governor of Minnesota, to be her running mate. Walz pushed for Minnesota to become a sanctuary state and signed legislation allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

Last month, six House Democrats joined with Republicans in passing a resolution to condemn the vice president as “border czar” and the Biden administration for its inability to curb illegal immigration. Among its provisions, the resolution also warned “the continuation of the Biden, Harris border policies would be disastrous for both the United States and the American people.”

House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who introduced the resolution, said in a statement that “Harris and every elected Democrat owns this historic border crisis that has turned every community into a border community. It is time that we return to President Donald Trump’s border security policies that put the safety of American citizens first.”

Comer is taking up the inquiry into Harris as his corruption-focused impeachment probe against Biden appears to be winding down. The impeachment effort led to hearings and criminal referrals against the president’s son Hunter and brother James, but to date has not resulted in articles of impeachment. There may yet be a final report released to the public.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
