Demi Moore ‘In Shock’ Over Winning First Major Award At Golden Globes

Actress Demi Moore became emotional during her acceptance speech at the 2024 Golden Globes, mentioning how she was “in shock” after winning her first major award for her craft.

“I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” the 62-year-old star told the audience after she was announced as clinching Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for the horror film “The Substance.”

This was Moore’s fourth Golden Globe nomination and first win after previously being nominated for “Ghost” (1990) and “If These Walls Could Talk” (1996). The actress had also previously been nominated for an Emmy and SAG Award.

While she has taken home People’s Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and other minor accolades, she had not yet won any major industry awards until Sunday night.

“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress,” she said during her speech. “And at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have.”

Moore continued, “I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it,” she said while becoming visibly emotional.

“Maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do. And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called ‘The Substance.'”

“The universe told me that ‘You’re not done,’” she added, thanking her co-stars. The actress concluded her speech by reiterating the message of the film she won for.

“In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough, I had a woman say to me, just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down a measuring stick,” Moore said. “And so today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong. Thank you so much.”

“The Substance” was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $78 million on a $17.5 million production budget. It received five nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
