The Trump campaign condemned “Saturday Night Live” for joking about the two assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump this year.
NBC’s sketch comedy show began its 50th season with a cold open that focused on the 2024 presidential election. Cast member James Austin Johnson, returning as Trump, portrayed the GOP presidential nominee at one of his campaign rallies.
“We love my rallies, except when someone does a bing bong bing bing bing, right at me,” Johnson’s Trump said as he used his hands to mimic the shooting of guns. “You know, that happened because of the rhetoric of the radical Left.”
“They say that me blaming the Democrats for inciting violence is the pot calling the kettle black. But frankly, I didn’t know the kettle was black until very recently. I thought the kettle was Indian, but then it decided to turn black,” he added, a nod to comments Trump made about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity.
The Trump War Room, an account on X affiliated with Trump’s campaign, posted a clip of the scene from “Saturday Night Live” to the social media platform.
“There were two assassination attempts against President Trump within a span of seven weeks,” the account said. “[‘Saturday Night Live’] apparently finds that funny. Disgusting.”

Trump attorney and adviser Alina Habba also reacted to the sketch, saying on X, “Have we lost all boundaries of decency in the media? Shame on NBC.”

The cold open also featured former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Maya Rudolph as Harris, Jim Gaffigan as Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Bowen Yang as GOP vice presidential nominee and Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), Andy Samberg as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden.
Later in the show, during the “Weekend Update” segment, Colin Jost also made light of Trump surviving a pair of assassination attempts.
After presenting a clip of Trump joking at a rally about showing off his “beautiful” body at the beach, Jost quipped in reference to the Pennsylvania shooting: “I’m starting to worry that bullet got a little more than just the ear.”
