Golden Globe watchers slammed Hollywood on Sunday night for being out of touch after a transgender-themed film won Best Picture for a Musical or Comedy of 2024, beating out blockbusters like Wicked.
At the 82nd annual awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Emilia Pérez, which blends genres as a musical crime comedy-drama about a Mexican drug lord who decides to undergo transgender surgery, took home several Golden Globes, and social media blew up about it.
“Emilia Pérez, a film about a drug cartel boss ‘transitioning’ into a woman, just won Best Picture at the Golden Globes. Hollywood continues to be absolutely out of touch with America,” one person wrote on X.
Another added, “When it comes to ‘Emilia Perez,’ the disconnect between industry insiders and the people this movie claims to represent—Hispanics—is impossible to overstate. It’s like the ‘Latinx’ debacle all over again: non-Latino elites imposing something on Hispanics that they neither asked for nor want.”
A third person wrote, “Much love but ‘Emilia Pérez’ is a terrible movie and it winning over ‘The Substance,’ ‘Challengers,’ ‘Anora,’ ‘A Real Pain,’ and ‘Wicked’ is a f**kin joke!!!”
And a fourth person pointed out “that ‘Emilia Perez’ is a Spanish musical directed by a French director who doesn’t speak Spanish and hates musicals. @goldenglobes you should be ASHAMED of yourselves for awarding such trash.”

While a fifth person did not hold back their thoughts, writing on X, “(W)e’re actually witnessing history this awards season tbh. We may never see a film as dogs**t as ‘Emilia Perez’ win awards. This is generational delusion from voting committees that we may never see again.”

The transgender-themed musical not only won the top honor for a musical or comedy in 2024 but also swept the night, taking home additional awards. Zoe Saldaña won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. It also won Best Non-English Language Motion Picture and Best Song in a Motion Picture.
During the acceptance speech for Best Picture, the French director Jacques Audiard turned the mic over to one of the stars of the movie, a trans-identifying male actor who goes by the name of Karla Sofia Gascon.
“I have a lot of things to say,” Gascon said. “Maybe you can put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul, our resistance, our identity. And I want to say, I won. I am who I am, not who you want me to be.”
