Republicans Offer Bills To Realize Trump’s Ideas For ‘Gulf Of America’ And Taking Back Panama Canal

This week, a pair of House Republicans proposed bills that could bring to life President-elect Donald Trump‘s suggestions for renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” — at least on maps and documents within the United States — and taking back the Panama Canal.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced on Tuesday that she directed her staff to draft a bill to make the “Gulf of America” rebranding happen as soon as Trump brought up the idea.

If the legislation is enacted, any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the “Gulf of America.”

And the commerce secretary, acting through the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, would oversee the implementation of changing the names in each federal document and map — an overhaul that would be completed in 180 days.

“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” Greene said on X, adding later, “We already have the bill written with legislative council and ready to file first thing Thursday morning. Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it.”

Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) is going to introduce a bill to authorize the president, in coordination with the Secretary of State, to enter into negotiations for the acquisition of the Panama Canal from the Republic of Panama for the “symbolic” amount of $1. The bill, according to a screenshot posted to X by The Washington Examiner’s Cami Mondeax, also calls for a report to Congress detailing progress on the talks, potential challenges, and anticipated outcomes in 180 days.

“President Trump is right to consider repurchasing the Panama Canal. China’s interest in and presence around the canal is a cause for concern,” Johnson said in a statement reported by The Hill. “America must project strength abroad — owning and operating the Panama Canal might be an important step towards a stronger America and a more secure globe.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
