Two-time Academy Award-winner Sally Field told her “horrific” story of having an illegal abortion in Mexico in an effort to convince followers to vote for Kamala Harris.
The 77-year-old actress posted a video on Instagram on Sunday explaining the ordeal. She began by saying she was still very “shamed” by it because she was “raised in the 50s.”
“I had no choices in my life. I didn’t have a lot of family support in any way, or finances,” Field said.
Field recalled being driven across the border to Tijuana, Mexico, by her family doctor, his wife, and Field’s mother after she had become pregnant prior to abortion becoming legal in the United States. She was 17 at the time.
She said the doctor gave her cash in an envelope and told her to go to a nearby building on a “scary” and “scrungy looking” street.
“It was beyond hideous and life-altering,” Field said of having the experience, adding that she had “no anesthetic” beyond “a few pumps of ether.” She said she “felt everything.”
“And then I realized that the technician was actually molesting me,” the celeb continued. “So I had to figure out, how can I make my arms move to push him away? It was just this absolute pit of shame. Then when it was finished, they said, ‘Go, go, go, go, go,’ like the building was on fire. They didn’t want me there. It was illegal.”
“I’ve been so hesitant to do this, to tell my horrific story,” Field wrote in the post caption. “It was during a time even worse than now. A time when contraception was not readily available and only if you were married. But I feel that so many women of my generation went through similar, traumatic events and I feel stronger when I think of them. I believe, like me, they must want to fight for their grandchildren and all the young women of this country.”
The “Mrs. Doubtfire” star said she’s supporting Harris for president because the California Democrat supports “reproductive freedom.”
“PLEASE. WE CAN’T GO BACK!!” Field concluded in her post.
Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, have made abortion access a main talking point of their campaign, falsely claiming that Republican candidate Donald Trump supports a nationwide abortion ban.
