‘The American People Should Not Suffer’: HUD Chief Turner Thinks Fed Chairman Is Playing Politics on Interest Rates

On this week’s episode of “The Signal Sitdown,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner weighed in on President Donald Trump’s ongoing fight with the Federal Reserve and its chairman, Jerome Powell, over high interest rates.
Turner agreed with Trump that interest rates should be lower and that others are “play[ing] political games” with interest rates, which makes buying a house more expensive.
Politics editor Bradley Devlin asked Turner, “What are your feelings on what Trump is trying to do to lower these interest rates [and] the personnel changes happening in some of our financial institutions?”
“Well, I think you see a president that cares,” Turner said. “He cares about the American people, and so he’s willing to take on the fight. He’s willing to encourage Mr. Powell to lower the interest rates.”
“It makes sense to lower the interest rates,” he added. “Put politics aside. The American people should not suffer because people want to play political games.”
“And if you look at the president, it’s all politics aside,” the HUD secretary said.
The president has repeatedly criticized the Federal Reserve’s decision to not lower interest rates, nicknaming the Fed chief “Too Late Powell.”
“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell should have lowered rates long ago,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sept. 5. “As usual, he’s ‘Too Late!'”
“[Trump] continues, and I continue, [Treasury Secretary Scott] Bessent continues, and others, to bring down the interest rates in order for housing affordability to increase. And so I’m grateful for [Trump] for that,” Turner concluded.
