Tim Walz Says He’ll Be At VP Debate; JD Vance Wants To Check For ‘Garbage’ Rules

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said on Wednesday that he will be at CBS News’ vice presidential debate scheduled for early October.

“See you on October 1, JD,” Walz said in a post to X, referring to Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), who is former President Donald Trump‘s running mate.

Walz was responding to a post from CBS News’ PR account, which said the new outlet had invited both vice presidential candidates earlier in the day to a debate in New York City.

The release said CBS provided the campaigns with four dates as options: September 17, September. 24, October 1, and October 8 — all Tuesdays.

“We look forward to their response and providing voters with an opportunity to hear directly from the vice-presidential candidates,” the release added.

Vice President Kamala Harris‘ team confirmed Walz would be in attendance while Vance, during a Fox News appearance, would only go as far as to say he “strongly” suspected he would be there.

Vance told host Laura Ingraham that he would take some time to assess the proposed rules and moderators. He added, “We’re not going to walk into a fake news media garbage debate.”

One particular idea Vance indicated he would not accept is having no audience at the venue, which was a rule in a prior debate between Trump and President Joe Biden.

The release from CBS on Wednesday did not mention any rules or moderators that have been proposed for the vice presidential debate.

Trump previously said that CBS would host the vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz. And Vance himself has expressed an eagerness to meet Walz on the debate stage.

In a swipe earlier this week over the “stolen valor” accusations that Walz faces in a controversy related to his military service, Vance said, “Happy to discuss more in a debate.”

Both Trump and his 2024 rival, Harris, are set to have their first debate face-off on September 10. That event is set to be hosted by ABC News.

Trump has floated two other debates next month, one held by Fox News and another held by NBC News, but Harris has not agreed to either one of them.

In June, Trump faced Biden in a CNN debate with no audience and mic cuts. Biden’s fumbling performance resulted in a crisis of confidence among Democrats that led to him dropping out.

Biden quickly endorsed Harris, who had been poised to debate Vance in the vice presidential debate, and she has since clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination to top its 2024 ticket.

During a rally last month, Vance quipped, “I was told I was going to get to debate Kamala Harris and now President Trump’s going to get to debate her? I’m kind of pissed off about that.”
