Trump Pauses Tariffs On Mexico After It Agrees To Send Thousands Of Troops To Border

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she is moving 10,000 members of the country’s National Guard to the U.S./Mexico border to stop drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum made the announcement after speaking earlier in the day with President Donald Trump following his decision to hit the country with 25% tariffs for not doing more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

“Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl,” she said in a statement.

“The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico,” she continued. “Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.”

She also said that the Trump administration agreed to pause the implementation of tariffs for one month.

Trump confirmed the news in a statement on social media, saying that they had “a very friendly conversation.”

Trump said that the soldiers Mexico was sending to the border were “specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”

“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico,” Trump said. “I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
