‘We Will Catch This Individual’: Authorities Provide Update on Charlie Kirk Assassination

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Utah law enforcement authorities gave an update Thursday on the search for the suspect who shot dead Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

“We will not stand for what happened yesterday,” Utah Commissioner of Public Safety Beau Mason declared.

“We are exhausting every lead,” he added, mentioning that the search is involving the FBI, state authorities, and “every local agency.”

“We will catch this individual,” Mason declared.

In response to follow-up questions, he said the suspect “blended in well with a college institution” and “appears to be of college age.”

Mason noted that authorities had questioned two persons of interest in the case, and condemned harassment those people faced after authorities released them.

“They faced scrutiny, they face threats,” he said. “These individuals were not suspects, they were persons of interest. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that.”

Mason said investigators had made “a few breakthroughs” and were “able to track the movements of the shooter.”

The suspect arrived on campus at 11:52 a.m., traveled through the stairwells to the roof, moved across the roof to a shooting location, then jumped off the building and fled into a nearby neighborhood, the commissioner noted.

He said videos from doorbell cameras and witnesses from the neighborhood had provided important information on the search.

“We do have video footage of this individual,” Mason reported. However, the authorities are investigating the footage and will not be releasing it at this time.

“If we are not successful, we will give that to the media,” he said.

Mason noted that Kirk’s family is “devastated.”

Robert Bowles, special agent in charge of the Salt Lake FBI Field Office, said agents “have been working around the clock.”

The FBI obtained the weapon involved in the shooting—a “high-powered bolt-action rifle.”

The FBI also obtained a footwear impression and a palm print.

Bowles thanked the community for bringing 130 tips, and added, “The FBI has brought every resource to bear.”
