16 Members of Congress Call for Statue of Charlie Kirk in Capitol

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., is championing an effort by members of Congress to place a statue of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot Wednesday, in the U.S. Capitol.
The Florida congresswoman posted on the social media platform X a letter she and several other House members sent to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., urging him to honor the Turning Point USA founder with the memorial.
“This is not a symbolic gesture, but a permanent testament to his life’s work, his courage, and his sacrifice. It will stand as a reminder that political disagreement must never be answered with violence, and that the fight for truth must carry on,” reads the letter, co-signed by 15 fellow congressional Republicans.
Luna attributed her own political success to Kirk in a comment posted with the letter, writing on X, “I owe my entire political career to Charlie Kirk. I would quite literally not be in office today if it weren’t for him.”
Kirk, set to be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump in the wake of Kirk’s assassination this week at a speaking engagement in Utah, was well-known for founding Turning Point USA, a grassroots organization that promotes conservative values on college campuses across the country. He was also a prominent adviser to the president and led voting drives through Turning Point Action.
“Charlie Kirk was a tireless voice for freedom. He dedicated his life to sharing the love of Christ with others and building the next generation of conservatives. His impact on our movement and on the future of this nation is undeniable. A statue of Charlie Kirk in the United States Capitol would be a fitting way to honor his legacy and remind generations to come of his unwavering commitment to liberty,” Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., a signatory of the congressional letter, told The Daily Signal.
Statues of well-known Americans are replete throughout the Capitol building, but especially in National Statuary Hall, a chamber in the Capitol building located south of the Rotunda. The National Statuary Hall Collection is composed of two statues per U.S. state that are displayed in the Capitol.
A state’s statues must be approved by the legislature of the state in question. A statue of Kirk, a native of Illinois, would likely not pass through the Democrat-controlled Illinois General Assembly, thus necessitating a different approach for approval.
Kirk’s popular podcast also showcased his devout Christian faith, which the letter notes.
“Charlie was also a man of deep faith whose devotion to his Christianity guided every word he spoke and every cause he embraced. He reminded this nation that our values—faith, family, and freedom—are not negotiable,” the letter explained, adding, “He loved Jesus Christ with his whole heart, and it was that love that gave him the courage to stand strong in the face of hostility.”
Some Republican members of Congress also introduced a resolution on Thursday condemning Kirk’s assassination and honoring his accomplishments.
On Friday, law enforcement officers announced that they had arrested a suspect in Kirk’s killing. The Turning Point founder leaves behind a wife and two young children and a legacy that touched generations of young men and women.
