Almost 60 Democrats Vote Against Honoring Charlie Kirk

The House of Representatives voted to honor the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk by an overwhelming margin Friday, approving a House resolution by a 215-95 vote.
The resolution, which was introduced by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., “condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Charles ‘Charlie’ James Kirk, and all forms of political violence.”
Additionally, it “honors the life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.”
A total of 215 Republicans voted in favor of this resolution, with four not voting. Republican Reps. Mike Collins of Georgia, Eli Crane of Arizona, Rick Crawford of Arkansas, and Derek Schmidt of Kansas did not vote.
On the Democrat side, 95 members voted in favor, 58 voted against it, 38 voted present and 22 did not vote. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, were among the Democrats who voted against the resolution.
The resolution also extends condolences to Kirk’s family and commends the law enforcement officers who apprehended the suspected assassin.
Although Congress has been mostly united in condemnation of the assassination, Kirk’s assassination has led to some disputes in the House of Representatives.
Prior to the resolution, Rep Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a failed censure resolution on Wednesday against Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., charging that Omar had disrespected Kirk. The motion would have stripped Omar of her committee assignments.
Omar said after Kirk’s assassination that “there is nothing more ‘effed up’ than to pretend than to completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence.”
A handful of Republicans voted to table the censure motion in a 214-213 vote, thereby ending the censure effort.
The Daily Signal exclusively reported that Johnson was introducing the resolution.
“Leaders at every level—government, education, media, and beyond—must stand united in unequivocal condemnation of political violence, regardless of their ideology,” the resolution stated, even as the outpouring of grief for Kirk has been met with hateful celebration of the conservative activist’s murder.
Thus, the resolution called for the condemnation of the assassination “in the strongest possible terms.”
“The tragic loss of Charlie Kirk must not be allowed to deepen the divides in our nation but instead serve as a turning point to recommit ourselves to better angels, and to the timeless American principles of liberty governed by truth and the virtues of peaceful dialogue,” the resolution added.
This is a breaking news story and it will be updated. Bradley Devlin contributed to this article.
