Police responded to an active shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning where at least four people were killed and 30 others were injured, law enforcement sources told CNN.
One suspect is in custody and the conditions of those wounded remain unclear, CNN reported.
“At approximately 10:23 a.m. officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
During a press conference outside the school, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters, “We do have a suspect in custody and we’re asking for your patience … let us get the facts that we need to make sure that we get this right.”
Apalachee High School is 45 miles east of Atlanta and has nearly 2,000 students. Students were released to their parents at 11:33 a.m., more than an hour after police responded to the shooting, 11 Alive reported.

“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement. “We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”

President Joe Biden has also been briefed on the shooting, the White House said, adding that “his administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information.”
Attorney General Merrick Garland also commented on the school shooting during a news conference, saying, “I want to address the tragic shooting that occurred this morning at a high school in Winder, Georgia. We are still gathering information, but the FBI and ATF are on the scene working with state, local and federal partners.”
