During her recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Vice President Kamala Harris said that she would be tough on illegal immigration if elected president, but her past statements about immigration enforcement cast doubt on the claim.
When asked about the Biden administration’s record on illegal immigration during the interview, Harris claimed that she would enforce immigration laws if elected president.
“I believe there should be consequence – we have laws that have to be followed and enforced that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally,” Harris told Bash. “I’m the only person in this race who actually served a border state as attorney general to enforce our laws. And I would enforce our laws as president going forward.”
But Harris has a history of advocating for the opposite. During a 2019 CDP/Univision forum when she was running for president, she said it was “wrong” for former President Barack Obama to deport three million illegal immigrants. She also bragged about how she suggested sheriffs and district attorneys in California ignore Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers placed on dangerous illegal immigrants.

“And I actually, as attorney general, um, informed California law enforcement that ICE detainers are not mandatory,” Harris said. “I disagreed with it and that’s why I issued that policy for the sheriff’s and the district attorneys of California telling them that these were not mandatory.”
Harris’ 2017 X post declaring “an undocumented immigrant is not a criminal,” is still visible.
During that same interview, Harris claimed that her task of addressing the “root causes” of immigration brought “a number of benefits,” including a reduction in unlawful border crossings. that a former Homeland Security official attributed to extreme heat and the creation of programs that mask the real number of illegal immigrants entering the United States.
Mass illegal immigration has also surged to record levels under the Biden-Harris administration, with more than 9.5 million nationwide encounters and about 1.7 million illegal immigrants avoiding border patrol and sneaking into the country in the past four years.

Biden, with no pushback from Harris, has halted construction of the border wall and ended former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy. The administration also canceled more than 350,000 asylum cases that allowed illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. indefinitely.
The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
