Biden Trashed For Honoring January 6 Committee’s Thompson, Cheney

President Joe Biden took a wave of backlash after it was announced on Thursday that he planned to honor Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) with the Presidential Citizens Medal before he leaves office.

“Throughout two decades in public service, including as a congresswoman for Wyoming and vice chair of the committee on the Jan. 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice — and reached across the aisle — to defend our nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency,” the White House said of the former Wyoming congresswoman, who was routed in the 2022 Republican primary after she voluntarily joined the lopsided January 6th Committee. “Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together.”

Biden also plans to award Rep. Thompson, who chaired the January 6th Committee, along with 18 others.

Critics weren’t so sure that the award was the honor President Biden appeared to believe it was, however, arguing that it was “meaningless” or essentially a “participation trophy.”

“Cheney receives a participation trophy from Biden for leading a political witchhunt against President Trump and allegedly tampering with evidence,” former White House advisor Mercedes Schlapp added.

“I never understood why people would turn down high honors and accolades. Now I do,” author John LeFevre posted. “Sadiq Khan is getting a Knighthood. Liz Cheney is getting the Presidential Citizens Medal. These awards are not only meaningless, they are a trophy for complicity in a rotten system.”

Cheney had been on a short list of potential “pre-emptive pardons” that were reportedly the subject of discussion in the White House, with the stated goal being to insulate her from prosecution that could stem from her role in the January 6th Committee’s investigation. Cheney’s name was floated along with a number of other antagonists of President-elect Donald Trump — such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) — as Democrats and their legacy media surrogates stirred fears that Trump might seek retribution once he took office again in January.
