President Donald Trump will be sworn in Monday with ambitious goals for his first day in office and first 100 days.
The major focus will be on securing the border and combating illegal immigration. But restoring the economy, and curbing crime are also high on his agenda, based on his remarks as a candidate before November, as well as president-elect after Election Day.
The president has the advantage of a Republican Congress, though with a narrow majority in the House of Representatives and less than a filibuster-proof Senate majority. Trump also plans to take executive actions in areas where he doesn’t need congressional authorization.
“The people have given us their trust, and in return, we are going to give them the best day one, the biggest first week, and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any president in American history,” Trump said in an address days before Christmas to Turning Point Action.
Earlier in December, Trump gave a few more details during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
His first focus was on securing the southern border and on deportations when asked what he would do in his first 100 days in office.
“We have people coming in by the millions as you know. A lot of people shouldn’t be here, most of them shouldn’t be here,” Trump said during the NBC interview. “But we have jails being emptied into our country. We have mental institutions from all over the world being emptied into our country. So, we’ll be doing that.”
Some of Trump’s plans can be addressed through executive actions, reversing what his predecessor President Joe Biden implemented. This could include reinstating the “remain in Mexico” policy to adjudicate asylum claims; resume construction of the border wall thaat the Biden administration had cancelled; and terminating catch-and-release.
Trump has also said he would launch the largest deportation effort in history on day one. This could largely fall under directing the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security to enforce existing immigration laws already passed by Congress.
To boost the economy, Trump vowed to extend the tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act during the first 100 days, which are set to expire this year.
“We’re going to be extending within that period as soon as we can the Trump tax cuts because they are coming due and they are very substantial for people,” Trump added in the NBC interview. “I think it will anger a lot of people, quite frankly, if we don’t get an extension of that. That’s what led us to one of the greatest economies ever.”
Trump campaigned on tackling crime. And his policies page on the transition team website says a goal is to “rebuild our cities, including Washington, D.C., making them safe, clean, and beautiful again.”
Recently, his nominee for attorney general, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, vowed to “make America safe again.” Trump said he plans to reach out to Democrats on this front.
“We are going to be focusing on crime in the cities. We’ll work with Democratic governors,” Trump said in the NBC interview. “Most of them, as you know if you look at the 25 worst places, are just about all Democrat-controlled cities and states, and we are going to be working with Democrat governors and Democrat mayors.”
However, several Democratic governors including in California, Illinois, and Massachusetts, have vowed to oppose the next president and “Trump-proof” their states.
Trump’s designated deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller, also talked about a first-100-day agenda that would include a strong emphasis on energy independence.
“Let me paint a picture for you, Sean, of those first 100 days,” Miller told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“Rapid, total, complete deregulation of American energy exploration. You are going to see an American energy boom starting right away. You are going to see all the regulations that are strangling job growth in this country and driving up prices, driving up housing costs.”
Trump’s Agenda 47 campaign document pledges to cancel the Biden-era electric vehicle mandate; and to “Make America the dominant energy producer in the world, by far.”
Miller added the border would be “sealed shut,” and “criminal aliens are going to be shipped back home, and foreign countries around the world are going to accept the gang members and the cartel members that are poisoning our families and murdering American children.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that the “Trump administration is planning a large-scale immigration raid in Chicago” this week.
Miller also made big promises on the world stage.
“You are going to see peace begin to restore to the world as the president works to bring back harmony in the Middle East, harmony in Europe,” Miller told Hannity.
Trump’s 20-point campaign document Agenda 47 included “Prevent World War Three, restore peace in Europe and in the Middle East, and build a great Iron Dome missile defense shield over our entire country — all made in America.
One campaign vow Trump seems unlikely to keep at this juncture is ending the Russia-Ukraine war upon taking office. Though after the election, Trump said, ”The Middle East is an easier problem to handle than what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine.” Trump played a role in securing a temporary ceasefire and hostage release in the Israel conflict with the terrorist group Hamas.
Agenda 47 also included, “End the weaponization of government against the American people.” Miller promised a more accountable government as well, that includes holding politicized federal employees accountable.
“You are going to see a government that is accountable to the people again. The swamp will be drained on day one,” Miller said. “Incompetent and disloyal people that are hurting this nation are going to be replaced with those who care only for the American people, the American worker, and the American future.”
