Ohio Democrats Have Their Narrative: Blame Trump for Inflation

Even with the recent inflation numbers just released for June, one can’t forget the outrageous levels experienced during the Biden administration. Nevertheless, Ohio Democrats have found their narrative: blaming President Donald Trump for inflation, specifically when it comes to tariffs.
This narrative was visible whether coming from the most vulnerable Ohio Democrat, Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, or one of the most liberal members, Rep. Shontel Brown of Ohio’s 11th Congressional District. Both districts are in the northern part of the state and border Canada via Lake Erie.
From her official X account, Brown shared coverage from Financial Times about inflation, which was tied to Trump’s tariffs. “Donald Trump promised to lower costs. Well, we know what his promises are worth–nothing,” Brown lamented, as she also claimed Trump’s presidency has “made life even more expensive.”
Brown’s office did not respond to The Daily Signal when reached for comment.
Under the Trump presidency, costs have come down. Earlier this week, The Heritage Foundation’s EJ Antonio also highlighted a contrast on the economy between the Biden and Trump administrations.
Kaptur posted to her own official X account coverage from NPR to spoke not only about tariffs but also the One Big Beautiful Bill that became law earlier this month. “Prices keep RISING under President Trump. The promise was lower costs but the Big Bonanza Bill for Billionaires and tariffs are making life more expensive.” Kaptur also included “#Trumpflation” in her post.
When reached for comment about her social media posts, Kaptur’s office highlighted portions of the congresswoman’s floor speech from this week in which she raised concerns about how tariffs were affecting trade with Canada.
From the House floor, Kaptur asked, regarding the tariff policies, “Why is the Trump administration doing this ying-yang again?” She was particularly concerned about the threat of 35% tariffs against Canada, which she referred to as “pure economic malpractice” and said was “reckless, rushed, and devastating to firms and working families across Ohio.”
“Canada is Ohio’s largest trading partner. Over 100,000 jobs in Ohio depend on trade with Canada, our state exports $21 billion in goods annually to our neighbor to the north, our largest fair trade partner,” Kaptur emphasized.
The congresswoman also went for a narrative many other Democrats have gone with when speaking out against the president, using the claims about how Trump Always Chickens Out, or TACO. “We have all seen the Trump chicken out before, and maybe Taco Tuesday will come again soon,” she offered, just as her time was expiring.
Others in the Ohio delegation, especially Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno, have praised the One Big Beautiful Bill and tariffs. Moreno was named a member of Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso’s, R-Wyo., leadership team not long after the bill passed.
Kaptur, who was first elected in 1982, won reelection last November by just 0.7 percentage points and is a target for the National Republican Congressional Committee with next year’s midterms. The committee has also framed the One Big Beautiful Bill in a positive light, focusing on tax cuts for working families.
“Time and time again, Democrat Marcy Kaptur proves just how out of touch she is with real Ohioans, pushing partisan nonsense instead of solutions. Kaptur’s out of control Trump Derangement Syndrome is one of the many reasons she will lose her seat next year,” spokesman Zach Bannon said in a statement for The Daily Signal.
Kaptur has garnered attention from the National Republican Congressional Committee in recent days for other reasons as well. Bannon shared on X reporting from NOTUS on the congresswoman’s “lackluster” fundraising numbers.
