Congresswoman Says US Should Give Israel Whatever It Needs to Crush Hamas

Israel doesn’t just have a right to defend itself, it has a right to win the war against Hamas, Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., told The Daily Signal. 

In an interview ahead of President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress, Hageman said the U.S. should give Israel whatever it needs to crush Hamas and end the war.  

She said she was disappointed in the previous administration’s efforts to restrict Israel and critiqued the common statement that Israel has the right to defend itself. 

“My response to that is: That’s a stupid statement,” Hageman said. “If you’re saying that they only have the right to defend themselves, what you’re saying is that they have to be in a continuous defensive position. That is not how this suffering is going to end.” 

She said she is surprised global leaders are not all calling for Hamas to return the hostages and bodies of the deceased hostages still held in Gaza. Hamas still holds 59 hostages in captivity, 32 of whom Israel has declared dead, according to The Associated Press. 

“We need to give Israel whatever it needs to win this war so we can move on to the next phase,” Hageman said.

When asked for her message to the family of 21-year-old Edan Alexander, an American still being held hostage, Hageman said she is sorry so many governments in the West took their eye off the ball in the Middle East. 

The Biden administration should never have lifted sanctions on Iran, Hageman said, because doing so allowed Iran to profit from oil sales and in turn, increase terrorism, she said.

“The fact that we allowed this to happen … I think this is a tragedy of just absolutely epic proportions,” Hageman said. “I think that we will be revisiting this for decades as a real failure on the part of leadership throughout the world to try to do with what is just an absolute cancer in the Middle East.”
