FBI Launches Criminal Investigation Into Former CIA and FBI Directors

President Donald Trump’s FBI is conducting a criminal investigation of former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey. Both Brennan and Comey served under President Barack Obama.
Brennan and Comey are under investigation over possible wrongdoing related to the Trump-Russia collusion probe, Fox News Digital first reported Tuesday evening.
Department of Justice sources told Fox that CIA Director John Ratcliffe has provided possible evidence of wrongdoing by Brennan to FBI Director Kash Patel. The investigation into Brennan includes alleged false statements to Congress.
The investigation into Comey is open, but the DOJ did not provide the specifics of why it is investigating the former FBI director.
While the details of the investigation are unknown, Fox reports that two sources say the FBI is looking into a “conspiracy” between Brennan and Comey.
The investigation into the former CIA and FBI directors comes shortly after the declassification of a “lessons-learned” document that examined the investigation onto Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 election.
After the 2016 election, an Intelligence Community Assessment judged that “Russian President Vladimir Putin ‘aspired’ to help then-candidate Donald Trump win the election,” a CIA memo released June 26 explains.
The memo reports that there were “multiple procedural anomalies in the preparation of the [Intelligence Community Assessment]” that investigated possible Russian collusion in the 2016 election. Anomalies “included a highly compressed production timeline, stringent compartmentation, and excessive involvement of agency heads, all of which led to departures from standard practices in the drafting, coordination, and reviewing of the [Intelligence Community Assessment],” according to the memo.
Abandoning standard investigative practices “impeded efforts to apply rigorous tradecraft, particularly to the assessment’s most contentious judgment,” the CIA memo states.
“The review of the 2016 [Intelligence Community Assessment] revealed how departures from established processes and tradecraft standards can affect even fundamentally sound analysis,” the CIA report concludes. “While the overall assessment was deemed defensible, the identified procedural anomalies and tradecraft issues highlight critical lessons for handling controversial or politically charged topics.”
Brennan testified to the House Judicial Committee in May 2023 that he had no hand in the discredited Steele dossier being put in the assessment. The dossier from former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele played a key role in the Trump-Russia collusion narrative. However, as Fox reports, “Records declassified as part of that review further revealed that Brennan did, in fact, push for the dossier to be included in the 2017 [Intelligence Community Assessment]” despite the protestations of career CIA officials.
In 2020, the Senate Intelligence Committee found no evidence that Trump colluded with Russia to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
