First American-Born Pope Draws Praise From Trump, Across Political Lines

President Donald Trump congratulated the first American-born pope Thursday after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who will lead under the name Pope Leo XIV.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., celebrated the historic day.

“Exciting news for the Catholic Church and the world. Pope Leo XIV’s election is a historic moment that marks a new chapter in the church’s leadership,” Scott posted on X. “Let us pray for a spirit of unity as we look to the future.”

Pope Leo XIV is a native of Chicago, prompting reaction from Mayor Brandon Johnson, who posted: “Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago! Congratulations to the first American Pope Leo XIV! We hope to welcome you back home soon.”

The well-wishes came across party lines, as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, posted on X: “Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The prayers of millions of Catholics around the globe are with you to guide the church forward and be a strong champion for compassion and dignity.”

This is a breaking news story and it will be updated.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
