Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who is running for the open Senate seat in Michigan, warned last week that she’s “not feeling [her] best” about Vice President Kamala Harris’ chances of beating former President Donald Trump in the battleground state.
Slotkin told donors on a video call last week that internal polling for her Senate campaign is showing bad results for Harris despite the vice president polling ahead of Trump in Michigan in most public polls. Slotkin’s call with donors was joined by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Axios reported on Sunday.
“I’m not feeling my best right now about where we are in Kamala Harris in a place like Michigan. We have her underwater in our polling,” Slotkin said.

Michigan is among the critical “blue wall” states, along with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, that many experts consider Harris’ easiest path to an electoral victory on November 5. President Joe Biden won all three states in 2020 after Trump swept the “blue wall” states in 2016 against Hillary Clinton.
The RealClearPolitics average of Michigan polls shows Harris leading Trump by just over one percentage point, which is a much closer margin than Slotkin’s average lead over Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. The race between Slotkin and Rogers, however, has tightened in recent days, with GOP internal polling showing that the two candidates are in a statistical tie, according to Axios.

A potentially major electoral problem for Harris in Michigan centers on the estimated 240,000 Muslims in the state, many of whom have expressed frustration with how the Biden-Harris administration has handled the war between Israel and radical Islamic terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah. The large majority of Muslims in Michigan have historically voted for the Democratic presidential nominee, but Muslim’s current dissatisfaction with the party has Democrats on edge for 2024.
Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), have visited Michigan regularly over the past two months, narrowing in on the economy and car manufacturing. The Republican presidential nominee told supporters in Flint earlier this month that he would put a 200% tariff on vehicles manufactured outside of the U.S. if elected.
