“Sex and the City” actress Cynthia Nixon spoke at a rally in Manhattan on Monday as people gathered to protest hospitals canceling appointments for minors seeking “transgender care.”
The actress spoke into a megaphone, describing herself as “the mother of a proud trans man.” Nixon went on to describe other trans-identifying people in her life, including her niece, her “best friend’s kid,” and her “kid’s best friend.”
“My wife and I, our lives are filled with the most amazing, beautiful, brave trans people, young and old… but especially young,” the actress went on as the gathered crowd cheered. “My trans kid had his top surgery at NYU a number of years ago,” she continued. “…the idea that this city is filled with young people who thought they had a place to go where they could receive the highest care and that place has now been shut to them, sickens me. Sickens me to my core,” the Daily Mail reported.
The celeb described the last two weeks since President Donald Trump’s inauguration as “horrific” and “an assault, a barrage,” leaving her unsure how to “block the horror.”
Nixon said she’s “mad as hell” and plans to keep returning to NYU Langone Health, an academic medical center, to protest. “What is happening all over this country, it cannot happen in New York,” she concluded. “Here is where we have to take a stand… NYU should be better than this. Shame.”
The Hollywood star was reacting to news that some hospitals were heeding President Trump’s executive order to protect children from irreversible gender procedures. NYU Langone Health had canceled appointments for two 12-year-olds who were scheduled to receive implants that dispensed puberty-blocking medication, per CBS News.
New York Attorney General Letitia James said the hospitals could be violating New York’s anti-discrimination laws by refusing treatment. “Regardless of the availability of federal funding, we write to further remind you of your obligations to comply with New York state laws,” she wrote in a letter, the outlet noted.
New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul also called out the hospital, saying, “We’re proud that New York state is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ movement, and we’ll never shirk our responsibility to protect individuals and their rights.”
President Trump’s EO called gender procedures for minors a “stain on our Nation’s history.”
“Across the country today, medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child’s sex through a series of irreversible medical interventions,” the order says. “This dangerous trend will be a stain on our Nation’s history, and it must end.”
Hospitals across the country have ceased performing gender surgeries following the signing of the executive order.
