‘Takes Two to Tango’: Trump to Forgo Talks of Annexing Canada Unless It’s Interested

While President Donald Trump still thinks Canada should become the 51st state, he said he won’t be discussing it unless our neighbor to the north is interested.
“It takes two to tango,” the president said in his bilateral meeting Tuesday with Canada’s newly elected prime minister, Mark Carney.
“I do feel it’s much better for Canada, but we’re not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it,” Trump said.
Trump said the relationship with Canada “would be a wonderful marriage.”
But Canada will never be for sale, said Carney, a Liberal Party member.
“Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign the last several months, it’s not for sale,” Carney said. “Won’t be for sale ever, but the opportunity is in the partnership and what we can build together. We have done that in the past, and part of that, as the president just said, is with respect to our security, and my government is committed for a change in our investment in Canadian security and our partnership.”
In response, Trump said: “Never say never.”
Carney visited the U.S. to speak with Trump about tariffs on Canadian exports. Trump said that nothing Carney offered in their discussions would prompt him to lift tariffs.
