Vance Touts ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ in Competitive GOP District in Wisconsin

Vice President JD Vance promoted the tax savings from the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” to working-class Americans at a steel fabrication company in western Wisconsin.
On Thursday, Vance took his “Big, Beautiful Bill” promotion tour to Mid-City Steel in La Crosse, Wis., a district represented by Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden. National Journal’s 2026 House Power Rankings rated Van Orden as the 13th-most vulnerable House member in the country.
Vance was joined at the rally by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the former governor of North Dakota, another Upper Midwest state.
Republicans are employing the spending bill as a weapon to win midterm votes from working-class Americans who will benefit from no taxes on overtime or tips, tax cuts, and Medicare changes.
“This legislation guarantees that hardworking Americans are going to have access to their Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits,” Vance said. “But what this bill refuses to do, and what Republicans absolutely refuse to do, is to give your hard-earned benefits to people who don’t have the legal right to be in this country.”
Van Orden believes the “Big, Beautiful Bill” will resonate with the people he represents.
“While Rebecca Cooke stood with her D.C. masters to oppose additional law enforcement to clean up crime-ridden neighborhoods in Washington and supported efforts to introduce the biggest tax increase on Wisconsin families and farmers, I stood with President Trump and Vice President Vance to block those attempts to make life difficult for Wisconsin families and farmers,” he told The Daily Signal.
Van Orden defeated Democrat Cooke in November in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, 51.3% to 48.6% of the vote. Cooke is seeking a rematch in 2026.
“Together, we delivered real results for Wisconsinites, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, securing $ 1 billion annually to protect BadgerCare, and an additional $500,000 for rural health care infrastructure,” he said, adding:
I’m proud of everything we have accomplished for the 3rd District in Congress, and I’ll continue to fight for you in D.C.
Several rows of high school seniors cheered as Vance said no taxes on tips or overtime would help them create a prosperous future.
“How nice is it to have the president of the United States and the Republican majority in Congress that cut taxes on tips, instead of forcing our waitresses and service professionals to deal with the IRS,” Vance said. “We ought to make it easier for folks to get by, which is exactly what we did when we cut taxes on tips, and Wisconsin family is going to be the beneficiary.”
After praising Van Orden for fighting for his constituents, Burgum pointed out that not a single Democrat in Congress voted for cutting taxes on tips, cutting taxes on overtime, or increasing the child tax credit.
“We’ve got lower taxes. We have far lower regulations,” he said. “Regulations are being cut by this administration like never before.”
The bill’s provisions supporting American manufacturing help Wisconsin workers get jobs and higher wages, Vance said.
“I happen to believe that it’s the dumbest decision we made as a country to reward foreign companies when putting stuff overseas, instead of right here in places like Wisconsin,” he said. “And now we have a different president with a different attitude. If you’re building in the United States of America, if you’re working in the United States of America, if you’re trying to earn a decent living right here at home, we’re going to fight for you every single day.”
“But if you build crap overseas and try to undercut the wages of American workers, you’re going to pay a big, fat tariff before you bring it back in,” he continued.
As the Trump administration wages war against crime in the nation’s capital, Vance told Wisconsinites Republicans will fight to make their communities safer, as well.
“We want you to be able to walk down a city street in broad daylight without getting mugged,” he said. “We want you to be able to take your family out to a nice meal wherever you want to without the fear of violence from criminals, whether they’re domestic criminals or international drug cartels.”
