Gunman Killed After Deadly Shooting and Fire at Michigan Church, FBI Leading Investigation

A gunman opened fire on a Michigan church Sunday morning, which was then set ablaze. At least one person has been killed, with nine others shot. Responding officers shot and killed the gunman. A motive for the attack is yet to be determined.

Hundreds of people were in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township when a 40-year-old suspect from Burton, Michigan, drove his car through the church’s front doors, exited his vehicle, and shot 10 people with an assault rifle around 10:30 a.m. ET, said Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye at a press conference.

“There are multiple victims and the shooter is down,” police stated. “There is NO threat to the public at this time. The church is actively on fire.”

The ten gunshot victims have been taken to the hospital, including one victim who is dead, Renye said.

A source told FOX2 Detroit that it’s believed the shooter set the church on fire. Authorities fear some worshippers were unable to escape the blaze, which engulfed the building. Said Reyne, “We do believe that we will find additional victims once we have that scene secure.”

The FBI was “immediately on scene” and will be “leading the Federal Investigation,” said President Donald Trump in a statement on Truth Social.

“The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America,” he said.

Vice President JD Vance also posted about the shooting on X, saying, “Just an awful situation in Michigan. FBI is on the scene and the entire administration is monitoring things. Say a prayer for the victims and first responders.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints responded to the attack with a statement.

“We offer thanks to the emergency responders who are assisting victims and families,” church spokesman Doug Andersen said in part. “Places of Worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection.”

“We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”

The shooting comes one day after Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints President Russell M. Nelson passed away at the age of 101.

Police plan to share more details on today’s attack at a 5 p.m. ET press conference Sunday.

This is an ongoing story.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
