Michigan Democrat Teams Up With Leftist Blogger Who Mocked Charlie Kirk After Assassination

Just over a week after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow — a Democrat now running for the U.S. Senate — attended a fundraiser alongside a left-wing blogger who mocked Kirk in the immediate aftermath of his killing.

On September 21, McMorrow held a fundraising event in Detroit that was hosted by Rebecca Schoenkopf, who runs the far-left news and commentary blog, Wonkette. McMorrow seeks to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI).

In an article Schoenkopf wrote on September 11, the day after Kirk was gunned down, she stated, “Charlie Kirk got shot at Utah Valley University yesterday, and he is dead. … Kinda seems like we should do something about guns.”

Schoenkopf also mocked Kirk as a “free speech hero” and criticized MSNBC for firing analyst Matthew Dowd, who had said on-air that Kirk was “constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech, aimed at certain groups,” adding that “hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which often then lead to hateful actions.”

In a post published two days after Kirk was assassinated, Schoenkopf described Dowd as an “actual Christian type of lib” and argued that he “correctly pointed out that Charlie Kirk unfortunately espoused a lot of hate.” In a post on Bluesky — the social media platform that many leftists fled to after Elon Musk took over Twitter and renamed it X — Schoenkopf again mockingly referred to Kirk as a “hero.” She wrote, “Boy sure seems like we’re firing a lot of professors this week for bulls*** made up specious selectively edited reasons. Charlie Kirk built that. A hero to the end.”

Wonkette published multiple articles criticizing Kirk in the days following his assassination. On September 11, Schoenkopf shared an article titled, “Second Amendment Comes for Charlie Kirk.” The article began, “Rightwing s***-stirrer and professional troll Charlie Kirk was shot and killed yesterday during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.” The Wonkette piece promoted by Schoenkopf added, “Charlie Kirk himself was an enthusiastic participant in the drive to push American politics toward constant outrage and violent rhetoric, especially if it made libs mad.”

In another piece titled “The Evil That Men Do Lives After Them,” which was also published by Wonkette on September 11, the writer said it was “inaccurate” to describe Kirk as someone who peacefully engaged in civil debate. Instead, they described Kirk as a “professional s***lord.” Yet another article posted by Wonkette quotes a pastor who said of Kirk, “You do not become a hero in your death when you are a weapon of the enemy in your life.”

The Daily Wire reached out to McMorrow’s campaign for comment. It did not respond.

During a speech on the Michigan Senate floor on the same day that she joined Schoenkopf for the fundraiser, McMorrow said that Kirk’s assassination was “horrifying.” She added that each person in the legislature has a responsibility to seek unity. In a social media post, McMorrow blasted conservatives, saying, “Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, we’ve seen too many use his murder as an excuse to divide, to blame the so-called ‘radical left,’ from the President of the United States to colleagues in my own legislature.”

While McMorrow was quick to condemn her Republican colleagues for stoking division following Kirk’s assassination, it appears that she had no issue fundraising with a leftist blogger who promoted articles that called him a “professional s***lord” and a “weapon of the enemy.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
