Americans Rate Mike Johnson’s Performance as House Speaker

More Americans hold a favorable opinion of House Speaker Mike Johnson after he secured passage of the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” last month. The new poll from Napolitan News Service gave Johnson his highest favorability rating since being elected speaker in 2023.

The poll, conducted in late May, revealed that 38% of voters view Johnson, R-La., favorably, while 34% rate him unfavorably. Another 18% haven’t heard of Johnson and 11% were unsure how to rate him.

Since his election as House speaker on Oct. 25, 2023, Johnson’s favorability rating has hovered around 30%, according to previous Napolitan News Service polls. His +4 net favorability in the latest poll is the best recorded yet.

Since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term, the House speaker fully embraced the president’s budget reconciliation bill, also known as the One Big, Beautiful Bill, which recently passed the House by a 215-214 margin.

The poll positions Johnson at the top of the four congressional leaders with the highest favorability and the only Republican or Democrat leader with a positive rating.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., remains largely unknown among Americans. He has a 23% favorability rating compared with 25% of Americans who view him unfavorably. An even larger percentage of voters (32%) have never heard of him.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., a critic of the budget reconciliation bill, received negative marks from Americans, with 35% viewing him unfavorably and 30% holding a favorable opinion.

But that’s not nearly as bad as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who received the worst rating among the four leaders, with 48% of voters viewing him unfavorably and 29% rating him favorably.

The Napolitan News Service poll of 1,000 registered voters was conducted May 25-28. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
