Gavin Newsom Blistered Over Fact-Check Gone Wrong: ‘This Video Is From 2020’

Even though he was technically correct, Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) latest attempt to fact-check conservatives — over a protest video that circulated via X — went sideways in a hurry.

The video in question was shared by a number of accounts and showed protesters surrounding several LAPD vehicles that had been damaged and set on fire.

Community notes clarified that the video was not from the recent confrontations between violent protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Rather, it was from the violent riots that took place in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in May of 2020.

Both Newsom himself and his press office quickly capitalized on the error, responding to multiple accounts that shared the video and saying, “This video is from 2020,” or “FACT CHECK: This video is not from this year. Misinformation like this only adds to the chaos the Trump Administration is seeking. Check your sources before sharing info!”

And even though Newsom was correct regarding the origin of that particular video, critics quickly pointed out the fact that there were plenty of current videos — many depicting similar carnage on the streets of Los Angeles — to go around.

Others pointed out the fact that Newsom had failed to contain the riots in his state in 2020 and was once again failing to do so.

“‘Five years later this place is still on fire’ may not be the campaign slogan you’re looking for, tho?” Emily Zanotti posted.

“Are you trying to imply that LA isn’t currently a hellscape?” Jillian Michaels asked.

“Yeah, you’ve been good at destroying this state for half a decade. Thanks for taking the bait,” actor James Woods said.

“This video is from a different horrific failure of mine,” John Ekdahl added.

“Who was Governor of California in 2020?” Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked.

“I also allowed rioters to burn police cars and assault cops in 2020!’ is not the own you think it is,” Libs of TikTok posted.

The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh weighed in as well, saying, “No, no, this is from a different time when leftist militants were torching police cars while I sat back and cheered them on.’ Wow. You really dunked on us, governor. Good one.”

“You’ll have to forgive the masses for mixing up which time you let Los Angeles descend into fiery chaos. To think, radical democrats want all of America to be run like California …” Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) added.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
