In Face of LA Chaos, Majority of Americans Still Approve of Trump Deportations

Despite Democrat efforts to condemn the Trump administration’s arrests of illegal immigrants, voter approval of deportation efforts continues to rise.
A recent poll from Napolitan News Service found that 56% of respondents either strongly or somewhat approve of the deportations of illegal immigrants throughout the U.S.
The country’s eyes remain glued to the Los Angeles riots. In the same poll, 79% of respondents reported that they were following the events either “very closely” or “somewhat closely.” Partisan attention differed slightly, with 82% of Democrats and 77% of Republicans reporting they were following the LA news.
President Donald Trump called up the National Guard to LA on June 8, after protesters angry at the arrests of illegal immigrants turned violent, setting cars on fire, looting stores, and overwhelming the LA Police Department. California Gov. Gavin Newsom raised an outcry over Trump’s actions, sparking heated debate between the two politicians.
The controversy appears to have had little effect on voter opinion, however. Just two days before Trump deployed the National Guard, his job approval rating hit over 50% for the first time in a poll conducted by Napolitan. An RMG Research poll two days after the National Guard was sent in found that 52% of respondents approved of Trump’s decision.
When questioned on the efforts to arrest and deport illegal immigrants, whether in LA or across the nation, respondents were positive. Fifty-five percent of respondents supported the LA deportations and 43% opposed them.
Men remain more supportive of the nationwide deportation efforts than women (64% to 50%, respectively), following trends from earlier polls and reflecting a tendency for more men to hold Republican views.
As riots in the Californian city still rage, a federal judge declared Thursday that Trump’s decision to call in the National Guard was a violation of the U.S. Constitution, ordering that the president return control of the troops to the state by midday Friday. A few hours later, however, an order from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily paused the order until a hearing on Tuesday.
The Napolitan News Service poll of 1,000 registered voters was conducted from June 11-12. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
