Moreno Has Questions on Ohio’s Ignored Illegal Immigrant Story

In May, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, sent a letter to the FBI and Department of Homeland Security about a 24-year-old illegal immigrant allegedly impersonating a 16-year-old student at Perrysburg High School. On Thursday, Moreno provided an update on the increasingly alarming situation.
The senator shared over X a letter from FBI Assistant Director Marshall Yates. “Insanity: an illegal migrant Joe Biden allowed into the country infiltrated an Ohio high school & impersonated a student,” Moreno posted. “After I called for an investigation, the FBI revealed he was armed & dangerous.”
Anthony Emmanuel Labrador-Sierra, a Venezuelan national, has been charged with several criminal offenses under Title 18. These include Sections 922(g)(5)(A), Possession of a Firearm by an Alien Unlawfully in the United States; 922(a)(6), False Statement in Connection With Acquisition of a Firearm; and 1001(a)(3), Making or Using a False Document.
Moreno sent his letter to FBI Director Kash Patel and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on May 21. Labrador-Sierra was charged on May 23. A grand jury for the Northern District of Ohio returned on indictment for these offenses on June 25.
As a press release by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio detailed:
According to the criminal complaint and underlying affidavit, Perrysburg Schools reported to the Perrysburg Police Department that they had received information that Labrador-Sierra, a student attending Perrysburg High School, was actually a 24-year-old man who enrolled under false pretenses. Labrador-Sierra is also alleged to have submitted false material information to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services about his date of birth in connection with applications for Temporary Protective Status and Employment Authorization Documents in 2024 and 2025.
The complaint further alleges that Labrador-Sierra does not have lawful status to purchase, own or possess a firearm in the United States, and that he submitted false information on the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Form 4473 to purchase a firearm. Among the alleged false statements he submitted when he purchased a Taurus 9mm, semiautomatic pistol from a licensed firearms dealer, were that he attested to being a United States citizen or national.
If convicted, Labrador-Sierra faces up to 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm by an alien; 10 years in prison for making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm; and up to five years in prison for using false documents.
According to WTOL 11 News Labrador-Sierra pleaded not guilty and is due back in court on August 5. The report also shared other concerning details:
According to authorities, Labrador-Sierra claimed to have been born in 2007; documents and IDs provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, however, appear to show his date of birth as March 27, 2001.
Though he attended Perrysburg High School for more than a year and participated in the school’s swim and soccer teams, the school and police began investigating Labrador-Sierra when a woman stated she has a 2-year-old child with Labrador-Sierra and provided a photo of an Ohio driver’s license listing the 2001 birthdate.
The Daily Signal reached out to Perrysburg School District for comment.
The school district put out statements in late May. One from May 27 mentioned that “Mr. Labrador-Sierra wove a complex tapestry of lies—carefully designed to manipulate systems and deceive individuals at nearly every level.” That statement also spoke about the “good faith” those in the district acted on, which “was taken advantage of by someone determined to exploit protections meant for the vulnerable.”
This story has received coverage from local news outlets, though it’s not received as much national coverage, especially when it comes to recent updates in the case.
In his own update Thursday, Moreno referenced former President Joe Biden, whose administration was particularly relaxed on immigration. During those four years, illegal immigrants were able to claim Temporary Protected Status.
The Trump administration has been revoking Temporary Protected Status, however, and the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the move.
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, has also called for further action to reform the program.
