Will OBBB Affect the Midterms? Here’s What Vance Told The Daily Signal

Vice President JD Vance touted the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Monday at the Metallus factory in Canton, Ohio. During his remarks, he spoke out against vulnerable Democrats who voted against the bill, including Rep. Emilia Sykes of Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. As he told The Daily Signal, she and other members who voted against the bill “ought to pay a price.”
“Anybody who voted against it, I think they ought to pay a penalty,” the vice president said, “because they voted against all those great things [in the bill], against the people of Akron and the people of Northeastern Ohio.”
Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who represents Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, is another vulnerable Democrat targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee. The Daily Signal mentioned her as well when asking the vice president about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s effect on the midterms.
Referring to Kaptur and her district, Vance answered that there’s “a lot of manufacturing and a lot of energy workers in Northwestern Ohio that would have benefited from her ‘yes’ vote.”
The vice president also stressed that he wished Democrats who “didn’t like this legislation … would come and talk to us” to “propose changes” in order to vote for it. He called it “the craziest thing” that they did not.
“This is the process of government. And these guys didn’t even come to the White House and try to make their concerns known. They didn’t try to make the legislation better. They just attack, attack, attack!” Vance offered. He then accused Democrats of merely trying to impeach President Donald Trump, as well as having “an obsession” with illegal immigrants. “I don’t think the American people should reward that broken style of politics, and I don’t think they’re going to, come November 2026.”
Vance also told The Daily Signal he believes the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will “help [Republicans] in the midterms,” as it is “a great bill for the American people,” including “American workers.”
The Daily Signal reached out to Sykes and Kaptur for comment. Kaptur’s office pointed to a post that the congresswoman put out on X in response to a National Republican Congressional Committee post highlighting Vance’s comments.
