The incident unfolded at the post office at 1165 Second Ave. Multiple law enforcement agencies have responded to the scene.
"I’m in contact with the Department of Public Safety regarding a shooting at the Main Post Office in Des Moines. The suspected shooter is in custody and the investigation is ongoing," Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds wrote on X. "We are monitoring the situation and our prayers are with everyone involved. Grateful for the immediate response by law enforcement."
"I’m closely monitoring reports of the shooting at the USPS facility in Des Moines," added Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa. "My prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. Grateful to the law enforcement officers and first responders on the scene."
Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told reporters at the scene that "we're secure right now," according to the Des Moines Register.
"I didn't see anything that indicated anyone had any life-threatening injuries," Parizek reportedly added.
Parizek said officers responded within three minutes. The shooting happened on the second floor of the post office and reports started coming in of shots fired around 9:10 a.m. local time.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. The victims are now getting treatment at a hospital, Parizek said.
The public is being asked to avoid the area as an investigation is ongoing.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
