5 Crimes That Could Be Behind The Ilhan Omar Raid

Federal agents raided the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Monday, and the search was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, not the FBI.

Omar’s sister and another family member received subpoenas, The New York Times reported Tuesday night, suggesting the investigation touches on her immigration history. But the refugee-turned-congresswoman has led a life so full of suspicious activities that it could involve, or extend to, quite a bit more. Let’s try to narrow it down:
1. Immigration Fraud Because of Her Father
Omar’s father was part of the communist dictatorship that Somalis were fleeing, not an innocent victim fleeing it. Omar can’t be charged with marrying her brother to get him citizenship because the statute of limitations is up on that. But if she only got her citizenship because of fraud, that’s a different story — her citizenship could be revoked.
The most interesting path that takes is one that reveals Omar’s entire story as an oppressed refugee to be an inversion of reality. Somalis were permitted to come as refugees to the United States because they were fleeing the carnage created by Siad Barre, a communist despot. Somalia consists of four major tribes, and Barre was extremely racist against one of them: the Isaaq. His military committed a genocide against them, killing as many as 200,000.
Omar’s dad, Nur Omar Mohamed, wasn’t one of the Isaaq — he was a high-ranking official in Barre’s army. Even a sympathetic obituary in a pro-Omar Minnesota publication describes her father as a colonel in Somalia’s army, and a wealthy and powerful man. Omar grew up in a guarded compound with her own servants, including a chauffeur.
So how did her family end up in Kenya, and eventually in Arlington, Virginia? Because by 1991, Somalis had enough of the oppression of Barre’s one-party state and rose up to overthrow him. Barre was exiled, and his goons with him. It was only then, when the regime fell, that Omar’s family left.
Omar has described her father as an “educator,” but if he concealed the fact that he was actually an army officer in the very regime whose oppression caused the refugee crisis, then he never should have been allowed in. (This is not unprecedented: Barre’s son and second-in-command also came to America, first to Virginia like Omar, then he moved to Ohio, where he started a company that bills Medicaid.)
Omar has said the raid on her home amounts to political persecution, but ironically, Barre passed a law allowing national security forces to indefinitely detain anyone who criticized the government, with no trial.

2. Immigration Fraud Because of Her Own Statements
Omar says she got citizenship through what’s called “derived” citizenship, which means that when an adult becomes a citizen, his minor children automatically become citizens too. But Omar long said she was born in 1981, meaning she would have been 18 or 19 when her father became a citizen in 2000. When she took office as a congresswoman in 2019 and began facing scrutiny, she changed her birth year to 1982 in congressional and Minnesota legislature directories. It’s also possible Omar’s dad never became a citizen. Naturalization records are only secret until after death, so an opponent in her Democrat primary requested her father’s records in 2022, and the Department of Homeland Security told her that none existed.
3. Her Husband’s Work Promising ‘Legislation’ For African Clients
Omar married her first husband in a mosque without registering the marriage with the state. While continuing to live with him, she married the gay man who appears to be her brother using a Christian minister and registering that marriage with the state. When she was running for office, she divorced her suspected brother and made the marriage to her real husband official. Then, when she became a high-profile Squad member and campaign cash started rolling in, she left her husband for her campaign consultant, Tim Mynett — allowing her to benefit from the huge sums of campaign cash she’d paid him. (She had denied dating him just weeks prior.) Mynett ran Rose Lake Capital, which the Washington Free Beacon found last year boasted that it could structure “legislation” on behalf of clients. Rose Lake’s clients were involved in foreign deals in Africa; Omar has served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and focused her congressional office on African issues. The House Oversight Committee wrote that “according to Rose Lake Capital’s website, it is staffed by five former diplomats who have experience in over 80 countries and involvement in 11 free trade agreements.”
Using a congressional office to do favors for foreign governments who paid the congressman’s family is exactly what sent Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to jail.
4. The Case of the Disappearing Millions
Rose Lake Capital claimed to manage $60 billion in assets, yet few in American financial markets had heard of it. Another company Mynett ran, EStreetCo, didn’t pay its taxes. Omar reported her husband’s net worth at up to $30 million — before claiming that was a clerical error and her husband’s net worth was actually zero.
After optics prevented Omar from continuing to pay Mynett’s firm with campaign cash, he began dabbling in bizarre and suspicious businesses. One of them was a partnership with fellow Democrat operative Will Hailer to invest in South Dakota marijuana businesses. Investors said $1.7 million disappeared. But Hailer said he didn’t steal it: the federal government’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which tracks money traced to terrorists and other foreign bad actors, had seized it.
The New York Times reported in January that “the Justice Department under the Biden administration opened an investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, in 2024 to scrutinize her finances, campaign spending and interactions with a foreign citizen,” but that the investigation stalled.
5. Feeding Our Future and Her Sister
Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, ran the People’s Center Clinics & Services in the Somali neighborhood of Minneapolis, which received a $2 million earmark while her sister was a state representative. Omar also pressed for the free-meals program that enabled the Feeding Our Future scandal — the largest fraud in Minnesota history as Somalis began billing for fake meals en masse.
Noor went on to found a group called Grit Partners Consulting, and publicly says her company “has secured more than $20 million in funding for health initiatives” and has “consulted on projects backed by” federal health agencies such as USAID and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Omar’s sister incorporated Grit Partners using a residential address that ties together at least three Feeding Our Future convicts, including mastermind Aimee Bock and a caterer whose fake receipts were essential to a large portion of the fraudsters.
The home is owned by Mashah Ahmed Ali. I spoke with him on the phone, and he couldn’t explain why his house connected Omar’s family and notorious fraudsters, instead claiming he had never heard of any of the companies, and people must have used his house without his knowledge.
Omar’s sister is married to Mohamed Keynan, who is also known as Mohamed Ali — the same surname as the homeowner. One of the companies created by the homeowner is a Medicaid company called Puntland Transport LLC. Puntland is an area of Somalia for which Omar’s brother-in-law is a fierce advocate.
Omar’s sister and her husband have now moved back to Africa, where he has reportedly worked as chief of staff to the Somali Prime Minister and policy advisor to Somalia’s president.
