  • On “60 Minutes” Abdul El-Sayed dismissed the males in women’s sports issue as “manufactured.”
  • The Left wants to dodge culture issues until they can regain power.
  • The economic pivot is a mirage.

Far-Left darling Abdul El-Sayed went on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday and unintentionally revealed the Left’s dishonesty about their sudden pivot away from talking about transgender and other social issues.

El-Sayed, who is running for Senate in Michigan, was interviewed by CBS correspondent Ross Douthat, who posited that in cases of transgender kids on sports teams, rights may come into conflict.

El-Sayed not only dodged the question, but he also pivoted to a mostly ludicrous lecture about speech and the internet … or something.

“I think we manufacture these social issues,” El-Sayed began.

There is a kernel of truth to that, but not in the way El-Sayed meant it.

The transgender bathroom and locker room issue was cooked up, manufactured one might say, by far-Left activists and became Democratic Party cant in very short order.

The Left promoted it as the cutting-edge civil rights issue of our time, and it rapidly became an ever-present (and frequently destructive) social fad with virtually no guardrails and monolithic institutional backing that squashed all dissent.

Fortunately, enough brave Americans were willing to stand up and speak out against the madness and so common sense is in many cases being restored.

Now, El-Sayed, like all the good Democrats following the company line after this all blew up in their faces, wants to spin the response and the necessary protections created for girls and children as randomly cooked up “social issues.”

The “manufactured” thing was only the first dishonest line of El-Sayed’s disastrous multipart answer to the problem of biological males in women’s spaces.

He then insisted that having men and boys in girls’ spaces is no problem at all because the internet exists and children are going to get exposed to things eventually.

“All the world’s information [is] in your pocket,” he said, referring to smartphones and the internet. “The notion somehow that you are going to prevent your child from being exposed to something that you may find disagreeable, and that that is going to be because of school, is so profoundly outdated. I think it’s really important for us to recognize that the free flow of information is actually a beautiful thing.”

There are good answers, bad answers, and horrible answers to this question. Then there’s this.

He’s treating the issue of males undressing in front of girls as if a children’s locker room is some kind forum to discuss pertinent social and political issues.

Something is being exposed all right but it’s certainly not an idea. That’s why parents are rightly outraged. And besides, a children’s locker room is not some kind of forum to debate pertinent social and political issues.

Does he think that a man pulling down his trousers in front of his wife—who wears a hijab by the way—would be no big deal? You can find all kinds of images of stuff like that on the internet, right, so what’s the big deal?

I often get exposed to things I find disagreeable to my stomach when I get on the subway. If they were in my child’s school, you can bet I would be justifiably outraged. It’s your duty as a parent to shield your children from harmful things on the internet. That’s not “outdated.” It’s a necessary response to the reality that more terrible things are instantly accessible to children than ever before because of the technological changes of modernity.

I don’t need to belabor the flaws in El-Sayed’s terrible response anymore because they are all too obvious. But there is a bigger matter at stake here than one politician’s bad attempt to pivot away from a serious topic.

El-Sayed continued his conversation with Douthat by delivering the usual spin to bring the conversation back to “affordability.”

“A lot of the cultural war issues that get fought right now are about trying to distract us from the fact that we can’t afford our gas, can’t afford our groceries, can’t see a doctor, are worried about whether or not our kids are going to have a good life,” he said.

And there’s the trick.

Democrats and leftists want to talk about kitchen table issues now, but they won’t concede an inch on the men in women’s sports issue unless they are absolutely forced to. They want you to imagine that they only care about lowering grocery prices (something they aren’t too good at but hope you don’t remember how things were a few years ago) but pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, undressing in front of your daughter.

That’s just an icky culture war issue that they totally don’t care about, but don’t you dare do something about it, you outdated weirdo.

If you buy that line, then you haven’t been paying attention.

Whatever electoral issues are floating up and down from moment to moment, the Left has not at all abandoned the cultural issues regardless of their current rhetoric. They’ve simply lost power and haven’t had the ability to affect them outside elite institutions and other deep-blue bastions.

Don’t think for a second that these issues have just gone away or that Democrats have reconsidered the merits of their cause.

All that’s happened is they’ve changed their messaging in the hope that the fortunes of politics will change, the wheels of history will take another turn in their favor, and they can go right back to enforcing their dogmas as if they were truth once again.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
