Amazon Cargo Jet Skids Off Runway, Bursts Into Flames Outside Miami Airport

A Boeing 767 cargo jet flying for Amazon’s Prime Air network skidded off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, tore through the airport’s perimeter fence, and slammed into vehicles on a nearby road, according to federal officials and video from the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration said 21 Air Flight 7598 ran off the runway at roughly 2 p.m. after arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft, a 30-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter carrying Amazon’s Prime Air logo, was landing on Runway 30 when it failed to stop before reaching the end of the pavement, according to NBC News. It continued past the runway’s edge, breached the airport boundary, crossed a perimeter road, and came to rest after colliding with several vehicles.

Footage circulating online showed the jet resting against a chain-link fence with heavy black smoke pouring from the wreckage. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 units responded and found the plane engulfed in flames; crews worked to contain the blaze and evaluate what the department described as multiple patients. The extent of injuries has not been confirmed.

All runways and taxiways at Miami International were shut down amid a ground stop expected to last into the evening.

Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel confirmed to NBC News that the aircraft was operating a Prime Air route on behalf of the company but was flown by contract carrier 21 Air. “This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering the details,” Nantel said, adding that Amazon was coordinating with local authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board told the outlet it is collecting information on the incident. A cause has not been determined, and it remains unclear whether the crew declared an emergency before landing.
