America Walks Out During Iran’s Speech At U.N.

A U.S. diplomat walked out of the United Nations General Assembly Wednesday as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of terrorism and claimed Iran has only acted in self-defense.

Audible boos erupted from the crowd as the emcee announced Pezeshkian’s impending speech, setting a tense tone before the Iranian president took the podium.

Pezeshkian was delivering his prepared remarks when he accused the U.S. and Israel of attacking Iranian scientists, civilians, and infrastructure.

“Those who are terrorists, and train and protect terrorists, describe us as such. We have only defended ourselves. We are not terrorists,” Pezeshkian said as the U.S. diplomat walked out of the chamber.

Pezeshkian continued his attack on the United States and Israel after the diplomat’s departure, claiming that Iran had been the victim of aggression and insisting that Tehran had not targeted civilians.

“America and Israel attacked us equipped with the latest technology and weapon systems, and our people stood steadfast,” Pezeshkian said. “Yes, they did hit us, but we did not bend the knee, we did not bow our head.”

He accused the United States and Israel of targeting Iranian universities, hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure, while also accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza.

“When I took over the responsibilities as president, they assassinated Ismail Haniyeh in Iran on the day of my inauguration,” Pezeshkian said, referring to the Hamas leader who was killed in Tehran in July 2024. Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device planted by an agent of Israel at the guesthouse where he was staying in northern Tehran.

At another point during his remarks, Pezeshkian held up a photograph of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — who was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes in February — as he defended Iran and criticized the United States and Israel.

Pezeshkian’s remarks came one day after President Donald Trump used his own U.N. address to issue a stark warning to Iran over its nuclear program.

“I have a big decision to make,” Trump said Tuesday. “Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before — maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly?”

Trump also warned that Iran will not be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon and described the Islamic Republic as the “number one sponsor of terror.”

Pezeshkian responded by claiming Iran’s nuclear program is intended to provide energy and advance the country rather than produce weapons. 

“We seek energy for progress, not to threaten societies with weapons,” Pezeshkian said. “For our sick people, it’s cure and treatment. For the agricultural sector, it’s food security. For industries, advancement and progress. And supply of electrical energy.”

Pezeshkian then rejected any effort to limit Iran’s access to peaceful nuclear technology, saying Tehran would not surrender what he called its inherent right.

“We will not, we will not bow our head and give up the right that is inherently ours,” Pezeshkian said. “We say it clearly: no nuclear weapons and no limitations to peaceful nuclear technology.”

He also accused the international community of applying “double standards” to Israel and Iran over nuclear weapons and inspections.

“The nuclear weapon is in Israel, but the inspectors in Iran. Israel kills, but Iran is subject to sanctions,” Pezeshkian said.

Pezeshkian directly addressed Trump’s remarks, accusing the president of violating the principles of the United Nations and vowing that Iran would not surrender under pressure.

“The resistance of the Iranian people will only increase in the face of sanctions, increased pressure, increased bullying,” Pezeshkian said. “We will never bow our head or bend at the knee.”

The Iranian president repeatedly characterized Tehran’s military capabilities as defensive, saying Iran needs enough power to deter future attacks.

“Iran must be powerful, so as to avoid being threatened,” Pezeshkian said. “We do not wish to use our power for hegemony, and we do not seek our security in the insecurity of others.”

He also warned against further conflict around the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran would not accept restrictions on its access to the waterway while other countries use it to support military operations against Tehran.

“We cannot let some have free access and gain their interest from a waterway while at the same time using that waterway to impose their aggressions upon us,” Pezeshkian said. “We will not succumb to that.”

He warned that expanding the conflict would threaten security across the region, saying, “The expansion of warfare will not result in security.”

Pezeshkian then turned to Gaza, defending Palestinian “resistance” and arguing that Israeli military operations would not eliminate it.

“As long as occupation, aggression, and injustice persist in the world, resistance will continue,” he said. “If it is weakened in one form, it will re-emerge in others — perhaps stronger still.”

Trump offered a sharply different characterization of the Iranian regime during his U.N. address, accusing Tehran of killing tens of thousands of its own citizens. Trump said the regime had “slaughtered over 72,000” people this year and that 10,000 were recently killed for protesting.

Despite his attacks on the United States, Pezeshkian said Iran remains willing to negotiate with Washington — but rejected negotiations conducted under military pressure.

“Iran must be understood by Mr. Trump and those who seek to bully us that we are ready for dialogue and diplomacy and negotiations without accepting the language of force,” Pezeshkian said.
