For years, the United States and its allies relied on expensive Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), Patriot, and other systems to shoot down cheap drones and missiles from enemy countries. To close the cost gap, the military asked weapons manufacturers to focus on developing cheaper alternative systems to supplement the high-end systems.

Anduril’s answer appears to be the new Steelfin system.

“Steelfin is a family of highly-configurable, mass-producible surface-to-air interceptor missiles that has been engineered to deliver cost, volume, and capability overmatch across the modern threat spectrum, including cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missile threats,” Anduril said in a press release.

“The modular design means that every configuration is engineered to the capability that the mission actually needs. The mission systems will define the cost,” an Anduril spokeswoman told The Daily Wire. “Several of the services are pursuing lower-cost interceptors to complement their existing arsenals of surface-to-air interceptors, particularly in the mid-tier air defense category. Steelfin naturally matches the size and performance capability that programs like Army Future Interceptor and Low-Cost Interceptor are looking to fill.”

“Unlike legacy missiles that carry fixed, inflexible designs that are resistant to change, Steelfin offers a common interceptor architecture that produces a family of interceptor missiles, each of which can be configured for a specific mission,” Anduril said. Steelfin can be fired from land- or sea-based systems and meets the Navy’s containerization plan.

Both the Iran war and the Ukraine-Russia war exposed stark cost disparities between offensive and defensive systems. Iran and its proxies have fired thousands of Shahed drones at U.S. bases and allies in the region. Shahed drones cost a mere $35,000 to produce, whereas American interceptor systems can cost 20 to 40 times that amount.

“We’re shooting down a $50,000 drone with a $2 million missile,” Admiral Brad Cooper said in March, describing the initial war costs.

The United States recognized the need to bring these costs down as large-scale exchanges would be a massive financial loss for the military. Now, Cooper said the United States is “spending a lot of time shooting down hundred-thousand-dollar drones with $10,000-weapons,” a marked improvement.

Some of the cheaper systems Cooper alluded to require attack helicopters and fighter jets to launch, meaning their operation is tied to jet fuel costs making their operation more expensive and risking pilot safety.

“I think that in our brain, if you think about the cost of a jet engine-powered Shahed, like what are we willing to pay today? I mean, if it’s American life, we’re obviously going to use what we need to, but at scale, what can we absorb to deal with those?” Army Secretary Dan Driscoll asked, announcing a new low-cost interceptor program. The Army is hoping the system will cost around $250,000 for each interceptor.

Driscoll emphasized the importance of allied compatibility for U.S. security.

“The grand strategy of conflict going forward is compatibility, like the way that small nations like Finland are going to be able to partner with large nations like the United States. We are going to be able to parachute into a theater where a lot of our stuff doesn’t exist, and so our allies [will] have compatible equipment to us,” Driscoll said.

Anduril says the new system is also protected from supply chain risks and can be produced at scale. The defense manufacturer also emphasized the ability of allied countries to easily integrate, customize and use the system.

The unveiling comes as the company announced a new shipyard project and a slew of new military contracts.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
