The terrorist group, which recently attacked a Saudi airport and killed at least 14 people, including one American, appears to be diversifying its missile program that is traditionally tied to Iran. The Yemen-based terror group has launched a salvo of ballistic and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, Israel, and other U.S. allies, in addition to targeting international shipping routes in the Red Sea, threatening to choke off the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The new components from China would help the Houthis make their own version of the Iranian Kheibar Shekan precision-guided missile, according to the Journal, which cited an unpublished report from the Conflict Armament Research. The Houthi version of the missile would have an extended range of 1,200 miles compared to the estimated 900-mile range of the Iranian version.
The extended range would place several American allies, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel in range of their strikes. The 1,200-mile range would also allow the Houthis to strike ships in Egypt’s Suez Canal, one of the most heavily trafficked and important shipping lanes in the world.
Depending on how the Chinese-made parts entered Houthi control, it could signal a future Houthi force increasingly independent of Iran.
“They have developed domestic manufacturing capabilities with artificial intelligence for drone and missile software, diversified their supply chains, accumulated operational experience, and established relationships with regional smugglers and international procurement networks,” Mohammed al-Basha, founder of a risk advisory firm told the Journal.
Chinese companies, which act under the supervision and guidance of the rulership of the Chinese Communist Party, are now the largest supplier of seized goods bound for the Houthis. If the China-Houthi relationship deepens and the terror group’s precision capacity grows, it could significantly undermine U.S. interests.
The Houthis, al-Qaeda, and the Yemeni branch of ISIS also use Russian and Chinese anti-tank, man-portable air defense systems, and anti-material rifles, previous reports found.
“Investigators uncovered evidence that Houthi forces appeared to be attempting to use hydrogen to power their uncrewed systems, an alarming evolution if confirmed and the first time any non-state armed group in the world has sought to use such technology,” a 2025 Conflict Armament Research report said.
The Houthis have promised a “painful response” to the U.S. should the U.S. enter the war; the Saudi government is reportedly begging the U.S. to join the war, which has enjoyed a brief pause amid a 17 year struggle against the insurgent group on its southern border. “God is great, Death to America, Death to Israel, a curse upon the Jews, victory to Islam,” is the group’s official slogan.
