Belief in Action: Reps Mary Miller and Riley Moore Share How Faith Influences Their Lives

U.S. Reps Mary Miller, R-Ill., and Riley Moore, R-W. W.Va., joined Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts on Tuesday to discuss their Christian faith and its influence on their work in Congress. 

The conversation about representing both Christianity and their constituencies was part of The Heritage Foundation’s ongoing “Belief in Action” seminar series.  

Miller and Moore shared their gratitude for the opportunity to play a role in building an America where faith and family flourish. 

“I consider it a great privilege to be an ambassador for the gospel and to proclaim, as Psalm 18:30 says, ‘God’s ways are perfect,’” Miller said. “I’m unashamed of saying that and that the foundation our country was founded on was faith and family.” 

Both representatives cited faith as the core principle that motivates their private and public decisions.  

“I think it all flows downward,” Moore said. “Your faith comes first, which then leads to your family. I’m a better father, husband, brother, son as strong as my faith is. And then comes my service.” 

Moore serves as a member of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies subcommittee which oversees issues like abortion and assisted suicide. 

 “Just being candid, the other side is obsessed with death,” Moore said. “They’re obsessed with controlling human life, or, rather, they’re obsessed with ending human life for their own means.” 

For Miller, her work as a member of the House Committees on Agriculture, Education and Workforce, and House Administration and chair of the Congressional Family Caucus is meant to promote traditional family values and small government policies. 

“I believe my constituents don’t want me to come out here and stand for legislation that puts government in the place of God,” Miller said, “or of the family or of business.” 

She and Moore also raised awareness about the overseas persecution of Christians and the dangers associated with what they believe to be an increasingly radical Democrat party.  

The upcoming midterms could be a critical test for Americans hoping to see faith and family values advanced in Washington, Miller and Moore claimed. 

Nevertheless, Moore believes the future is bright regardless of how the midterm elections go for conservatives because the Republican party can continue with its success under the leadership of current Vice President JD Vance. 

“This is just the beginning,” Moore said, “of the realignment of the Republican Party back toward putting the American worker, the American family, and our churches back at the center of public policy.”
