Mitte was under pressure from his fiancée to choose between her and his mother — and he appeared reluctant to do so, TMZ reported on Tuesday. Citing “multiple sources close to his family,” the outlet said that Kennedy Suarez — who got engaged to Mitte in 2025 — did not get along with Mitte’s mother, Dyna, and believed that she was putting a strain on their relationship.
The outlet also said that Mitte, who was close with his sister Lacianne, did not want to cut off relationships with his family — but it appeared as though his engagement was still on at the time of his death.
Mitte died by suicide on Monday — October 12 — in Brownsville, Texas, one year almost to the day after he proposed to Suarez on October 10, 2025.
The “Breaking Bad” actor, 34, was an outspoken advocate for actors with disabilities. He lived with cerebral palsy — and the character he played on the hit television show, Walter White Jr., also had cerebral palsy — and used his platform to bring awareness and support to others in the film industry who were living with disabilities.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” a representative for Mitte said in a statement shared with Variety on Monday. “Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion.”
“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on ‘Breaking Bad’ has died. I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm,” co-star Bryan Cranston wrote in a tribute to his on-screen son. “Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination.”
