- California will remain under Democrat leadership once again after Xavier Becerra won the California governor’s race.
- Becerra led Republican Steve Hilton by about 30% with 39% of the total votes tallied.
- With Democrats controlling both the state Assembly and Senate, Becerra is positioned to face fewer legislative obstacles in advancing his agenda.
California will remain under Democrat leadership for another four years, as former Biden administration official Xavier Becerra has defeated Republican Steve Hilton in the race for governor.
Decision Desk HQ called the race for Becerra at 11:13 p.m. EST, with Becerra leading Hilton by 64.6% to 35.6%.
The result was expected, as the latest poll of likely voters by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times in late October, showed Hilton with just 34% support, compared with Becerra at 61%.
In a celebratory post on X, Becerra, who campaigned largely on continuing Newsom’s legacy, preserving health care access for illegal immigrants, and opposing Trump’s policies, said he would “fight for every family in this state, every single day.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly congratulated Becerra online.
“Xavier Becerra will be a governor who will carry the torch for California—someone who, with Dr. Reyes, will represent our state and its diverse communities. A son [of] immigrants, a product of the California dream who will stand up to Donald Trump and represent our values,” Newsom posted on X.
With Democrats controlling both the state Assembly and Senate, Becerra faces few legislative obstacles in advancing his agenda.
Xavier Becerra is set to take office on January 4, 2027, succeeding Newsom, who served eight years in office.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
