The popular Autopia car-themed attraction with its gas-powered engines will be replaced with electric ones in response to a violation issued by the California Air Resources Board.

The cars currently run on 8.5 horsepower Honda four-stroke engines similar to ones used to run generators and pressure washers, as noted by The New York Times. Disney announced plans to electrify the ride in 2024 without mentioning that state regulators had issued a notice of violation; the company later paid a $56,250 settlement and agreed “to retire the gas-engine powered Autopia fleet” by early 2027.

The Autopia ride sits in the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland and has continuously operated in some form since 1955 when the park opened. The ride represented the nation’s obsession with the automobile and gave young park visitors a chance to feel like they were really driving. The sound and smell of the engines were always part of the appeal.

The Times interviewed Peter Menotti, a Disney fan who built a replica of the cars after falling in love with them as a child.

“I don’t know how to describe it, man,” he said of the ride. “It’s just this feeling as a kid that I’m empowered, I’ve got a car, I can drive, I’m growing up.”

Menotti said he believes the electric version of the cars won’t have the same effect.

“That’s part of the magic,” he said. “It’s that gas smell that takes you back. Without that buh-buh-buh-buh-buh sound, it’s just not the same.”

The cars’ original designer, meanwhile, is on board with the change.

“For 26 years, I’ve been arguing, ‘When are you going to do anything to get rid of that gasoline?’” Bob Gurr, 95, told the outlet of the ride. “The dirtiest place on Earth is the Autopia attraction at Disneyland in the city of Anaheim.”

Disney declined to provide a comment for the NYT article. Gurr’s rep asked for his statement to be retracted, noting that Disney had asked for him to stop speaking publicly about the change. But Gurr did not say his statements were off the record.

This echoed what Gurr said in 2024, when he told the LA Times, “Get rid of those God-awful gasoline fumes.”

Disney also commented on the change two years ago. “Since opening with Disneyland park in 1955, Autopia has remained a guest-favorite most popular with young kids experiencing driving for the first time,” Disney spokesperson Jessica Good said in a statement at the time.

“As the industry moves toward alternative fuel sources, we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years.”

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
