Democrats Reveal They’re Cheering For Foreign Countries To Win World Cup

A pair of New York Democrats revealed who they were rooting for in the World Cup, and it wasn’t the United States. 

During an appearance last week on New York’s PIX11 TV channel, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and primary challenger Darializa Avila Chevalier both listed another country when asked who they were “rooting for” in the World Cup. The two are candidates in New York’s heavily Democratic 13th congressional district. 

“The first match this week in a MetLife Stadium taking place in New Jersey,” host Dan Mannarino said. “But what do you think will win it all? Who are you rooting for?”

“I like Mexico,” said Espaillat, who describes himself as the “first formerly undocumented immigrant” to be elected to Congress. He says that he was brought to the United States from the Dominican Republic illegally by his parents before they were given green cards. 

“I’m rooting for Senegal,” said Chevalier, a far-Left candidate who identifies as a democratic socialist and is the child of immigrants from the Dominican Republic.

Espaillat is the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He has been in Congress since 2017 and is backed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). 

Chevalier is supported by New York democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a coalition of leftist groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations Action and the New York City Democratic Socialists of America. She previously posted on social media, “f*ck Kamala Harris” and called for “no more police at all ever.”

“The mayor and I strongly disagree as it relates to the congressional races, particularly the endorsement that was made against Congressman Adriano Espaillat,” Jeffries previously said. “We are fully and squarely behind [Espaillat], and we are going to make sure we do everything we can to ensure he is re-elected.”

Early voting in the race began earlier this month though the official election day is June 23. 

Patriotism has been declining among Democrats for years, with just 29% of Democrats saying they are extremely or very proud to be an American ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary, according to an NBC News poll released on Sunday. That contrasts with about 90% of Republicans who say they are proud to be Americans. 

The United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 in its first World Cup game last week.
