Dozens Of Americans Still Missing As Flood Death Toll Nears 1,000

More than 900 people are dead and thousands are missing, including around 85 Americans, after a catastrophic mountain disaster unleashed a wall of water, ice, and mud across Nepal and Tibet.

An international search effort is scrambling against the clock to locate thousands of victims swallowed up by the raging flood.

The horrific death toll hit at least 903 on Monday as officials warned the nightmare is far from over. The number of missing individuals skyrocketed to 4,247 in Nepal, including nearly 600 foreign nationals. U.S. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told Fox News that authorities are still trying to locate around 85 Americans as of Sunday evening. Disaster relief workers on the ground describe scenes of horrific destruction as the ferocious torrents completely erased entire towns from the map in a matter of minutes.

There is more possible danger. A massive landslide-dammed lake sitting above the critical Nepal–Tibet border checkpoint is currently overflowing, threatening to burst and send a second wave of destructive water downstream.

With more than 90,000 people directly impacted and entire mountain communities flattened, officials warn that navigating the shifting, unstable terrain could delay full recovery operations for months, leaving families clinging to hope as rescue crews continue digging through the dark.

The devastation was triggered high in the Himalayas near the northern border with China when a massive glacier and rock slope suffered a catastrophic collapse.

“The slope failure involving a glacier generated energy equivalent to a M5.2 earthquake. The debris flow and flood travelled approximately 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles). A second seismic event was recorded approximately 3-hours later, generating energy equivalent to a M4.2 earthquake,” the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

What resulted was a monstrous, fast-moving “mountain tsunami” that created a wall of churning mud, ice, trees, and heavy debris that surged down the steep Himalayan valleys. In some areas, river waters surged an astonishing 30 feet in just 30 minutes, giving helpless residents almost no time to flee. The flood obliterated homes, smashed critical bridges, tore up roads, and severely crippled telecommunications and electrical grids.

Morgues across the country have been completely overwhelmed, forcing authorities in the Chitwan district to dig hundreds of emergency mass graves in a local forest to bury bodies washed miles downstream.

Heavy machinery, controlled explosives, and searchlights are working around the clock as rescuers dig through mud and rock in an attempt to find 933 workers who are missing from multiple hydropower projects in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
