Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed told a crowd of students Friday that doctors, not the government, should get the final say on whether children undergo sex-change procedures.

Speaking at a rally at Michigan State University, El-Sayed was responding to a student’s question about protections for transgender medical procedures. He told the crowd that physicians like himself — who he said attended a “whole ass” medical school alongside classmates who did the same — are the qualified voices patients should rely on for treatment decisions, according to Fox News Digital.

The remarks came as the Trump administration has pushed several major hospital systems — including Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Connecticut Children’s Hospital and, this week, Mount Sinai — to end pediatric gender-transition procedures under agreements with the Justice Department.

El-Sayed also drew a comparison to the Right to Try Act, a law backed by conservatives that lets terminally ill patients access experimental drugs without FDA approval, suggesting Republicans already accept the principle that treatment decisions shouldn’t be dictated by the government.

His comments arrive months after Politico reported that El-Sayed, despite building much of his campaign around his identity as a “physician,” has never held a medical license in Michigan or New York, the two states where he trained and worked. His clinical experience amounts to a four-week sub-internship, an experience he once described in a 2022 podcast as “cosplaying” a doctor. Michigan’s Democratic primary rival Mallory McMorrow’s campaign seized on the disclosure, accusing him of misleading voters about credentials essential to his candidacy. El-Sayed’s campaign has said he has earned the right to be called “doctor” through his degrees and public health work, even without a practicing license.

The research base for youth sex change treatments remains limited, and the United Kingdom’s National Health Service has curtailed hormone treatments for teenagers after concluding the evidence supporting them was weak.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
