Michigan Democrat Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed argued that parents should stop trying to “protect” their daughters from males on their sports teams and in their intimate spaces because they’ll be corrupted by the internet anyway.

El-Sayed made his shocking argument during a “60 Minutes” interview that aired Sunday, just two days before voters head to the polls. “60 Minutes” correspondent Ross Douthat asked the Democrat candidate, “What happens with transgender kids on sports teams? Like, these are places where rights are in conflict, right?”

“I don’t know that that’s actually true,” El-Sayed responded, downplaying the issue. “I think we manufacture these social issues.”

“Here’s the thing about this,” he continued, pointing out that Douthat had a smartphone. “You can get access to anything and everything in the whole world — all the world’s information in your pocket. The notion, somehow, that you’re going to prevent your child from something that you may find disagreeable, and that that is going to be because of school is so outdated — because, of course, you have all the information, and they have all the information.”

“So here’s the thing about it: I think it’s really important for us to recognize that the free flow of information is actually a beautiful thing, it’s really important,” he continued. “And the most important thing you can do is not try to protect the person from seeing a thing. It’s about trying to make sure that as you coach your kid through the world, that you are engaging with them and saying, ‘Here’s what I believe, here’s what you may see in the world, you get to make your choices about who you are going to be in the world.’ … The internet is a real thing.”

Thousands of female athletes have been affected by the loss of competitive opportunities due to boys being allowed to compete in their sports, according to SheWon, a volunteer-run database documenting cases of female athletes displaced from podium positions. As of June 2025, the organization had documented 3,419 displaced podium spots across 1,433 competitions, affecting 2,389 women and girls in 46 sports. The database relies on publicly available results and volunteer research, rather than an official government tally.

Moreover, females are being exposed to nude males in their private spaces, like locker rooms and bathrooms. Female swimmers at the 2022 NCAA championships, including former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, were forced to share a locker room with University of Pennsylvania trans-identifying swimmer Lia Thomas, a man with intact male genitalia. Female athletes later described encountering Thomas naked while they were changing. In a congressional hearing, Gaines testified that she and her teammates were expected to undress in front of Thomas, with some girls resorting to bathroom stalls to preserve their privacy.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
