Endangered GOP Senate Candidates Take Sudden Turn On Iran War

Battleground GOP Senate candidates facing pressure over high gas prices are breaking with President Donald Trump over the Iran war.

The break began Monday with Iowa Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson and was followed just hours later by Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. By Tuesday, Ohio Sen. Jon Husted had also called for the immediate end of the military conflict, as Republicans up and down the ballot face bleak poll numbers with just 41 days to go.

“The war in Iran needs to end to bring costs down — but Michigan families can’t afford to wait,” Rogers said in a grocery-store-themed campaign video. “So until this war is over, I’m calling for a temporary embargo on American diesel exports.”

The messaging marks a rare break with the White House as the national average for a gallon of regular gas hits $4.47, while the average in battleground Michigan stands at $4.84, according to AAA.

“The war needs to come to an end as quickly as possible so that we can lower gas prices,” Husted told Politico Tuesday.

In Iowa, Hinson said the prolonged military campaign is “squeezing” her constituents.

“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran. We need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices,” Hinson said.

She proposed suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, expanding E15 availability, reinstating the $1-per-gallon biodiesel tax credit and creating a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers facing higher costs.

“I am working every day to deliver bipartisan results for Iowans, and I will work with anyone who is ready to tackle this challenge immediately,” she said.

Critics, however, point out that Hinson repeatedly voted against resolutions invoking the War Powers Resolution to direct the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran. She voted against such measures in March, April, May, and July, as well as a September resolution that passed the House 220-204.

Almost seven months into the conflict, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s leadership remains defiant as Trump warned at the United Nations General Assembly that he may “annihilate” the country without a peace deal. 

In response, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended Tehran’s nuclear program during his U.N. address Wednesday, insisting Iran will not give up what he called its right to peaceful nuclear technology.

“For our sick people, it’s cure and treatment. For the agricultural sector, it’s food security. For industries, advancement and progress. And supply of electrical energy,” Pezeshkian said.

“We will not bow our head and give up the right that is inherently ours,” he added. “We say it clearly: no nuclear weapons and no limitations to peaceful nuclear technology.”
